The M14 Comes To Airsoft, And Blows Us Away.
We’re fans of Airsoft as a sport, and we’re real fans of ‘real Airsoft’, where the weapons and the ammunition limits (and magazine weights) match what the real guns carry. It makes for a much more rigorous game, and really puts a premium on having a good Airsoft sniper on your team.
Here’s why – realistic airsoft training means that rates of fire are lower, and people have fewer shots to shoot after lugging around their magazines. Which puts a damper on “Steve Spray And Pray” as a player type – you know him, the guy who can’t be bothered to aim, but will hold down the trigger for suppressing fire like there’ s no tomorrow.
When people are carrying realistic magazine weighs and ammo, the number of shots you carry (and how much that weight slows you down) becomes an important tactical consideration. It also means someone who can sight in, aim, and hit what he aims at is worth his weight in gold, and that type of player will eventually gravitate towards a sniper configured rifle, like the Airsoft M14 Sniper Rifle.
The M14 is an all electric rifle that’s modeled off of the same M14 rifle used by US troops for light sniper work. It’s got the full weight kit, is built nice and durable, uses standard 6mm airsoft bbs, and the stock is coated in the same non-skid grip material that a real gun has, making it sort of cling to your hands when you cozy up to it for a shot.
Now, no Airsoft Sniper Rifle is going to be as accurate as the real thing – this is because the rounds aren’t as heavy, nor are they going as fast. That being said, build quality has a serious effect on the accuracy of an Airsoft gun, and the M14 is one of the case in point examples of the good side. We’ve all used cheap Makarov rip-offs that are accurate to about 10 feet; the M14 airsoft sniper rifle actually gets good three shot groupings at a bit over 200 feet, which is almost unheard of in Airsoft combat. (It’s on the box rating is 320 fps, and 150 feet of effective range. Testers regularly hit head sized targets at 200 feet, which is merely a testament to how well made it is.)
In terms of mechanicals – the operations of using the gun, the M14 Airsoft sniper rifle is excellent, with good tactile and kinetic responses – you have to handle it pretty closely to the real M14, and that just adds to the fun.
It’s also got a good scope mount – and while a scope isn’t essential – since most Airsoft players can set up a target at about the maximum range of the gun – it’s useful for recon and surveillance missions, even if the people you’re eyeballing aren’t within range of the gun itself…yet. It’s also got attachment points (a weaver rail) for a bipod or night sights.
It doesn’t leave you high and dry in close quarters drills either; it’s capable of full auto, though it’ll chew through magazines in nothing flat. Still, nice to know you have it if your position is getting overrun.
